Middle School Academics

Our Middle School community is grounded in a shared commitment to nurture thoughtful, capable, and compassionate learners.

The middle school years are a time when students begin to think more independently, develop their voices, and build the confidence to take intellectual risks. Our academic program is intentionally designed to support this growth through rigorous coursework, supportive faculty relationships, and opportunities for exploration.

Across disciplines, we nurture students who think deeply, communicate with purpose, and approach learning with curiosity and confidence—whether they are analyzing literature, tackling complex math problems, exploring scientific questions, engaging in civic dialogue, learning new languages, producing digital media, or designing technology.

At Milton, we celebrate student voice, creativity, collaboration, and ethical responsibility, empowering each learner to become a confident problem solver and effective communicator. With intentional focus on executive functioning skills and social-emotional growth, our inclusive community encourages students to explore diverse perspectives, practice empathy, embrace challenges, and discover their own strengths. 

Here, every student is prepared not only to thrive within our Middle School, but to contribute meaningfully to the wider world.

Our Middle School academic program helps students become thoughtful thinkers, effective communicators, and confident problem-solvers. Through challenging coursework, meaningful relationships, and intentional skill-building, students develop the habits and mindsets that prepare them for Milton’s Upper School and beyond.

English

To cultivate independent readers and writers who engage deeply with literature. We aim to support students as they develop empathy and critical thinking skills while learning to communicate, argue and express themselves with clarity and purpose. We hold a commitment to student voice, equity, collaboration, and the belief that the stories we read and write help shape identity and strengthen our shared humanity.

Math

To develop students’ ability to reason mathematically by balancing inquiry and skill development, enabling them to make sense of problems, think deeply about mathematical relationships, and effectively communicate problem-solving strategies.

Social Studies

To equip students with the historical, civic, and skills-based knowledge to critically engage as global citizens. Through critical reading, analytical writing, comprehensive research, and meaningful civil discourse, students learn to evaluate sources, build strong arguments, and collaborate with their peers.

Languages

To foster global citizenship through language acquisition and cultural understanding. Our students learn to communicate effectively while developing an appreciation for diverse perspectives. Performing Arts

To encourage students to recognize, cultivate, and share their own voices through the medium of theatre while also celebrating and learning from other’s creative perspectives.

Digital Media & Film

To further student’s visual literacy, train them in the use of audiovisual technology tools through engaging with projects that take timely and relevant forms, and encourage the expression of their experience and ideas through the medium of video.

To provide each student with the knowledge, skills, and strategies associated with executive functioning, social and emotional awareness, and effective communication, in order to successfully maneuver through the Middle School years and beyond.
